Catherine the Great teaser & trailer

von Peter himself has had a long time soft spot for the Seven Years War in Europe. Catherine the Great is contemporous of that time so the HBO series of that well known German lady would be of interest. “Would be of interest” as von Peter himself does not have HBO but who knows what possibilities will present themselves in the future.

Some stolen blurb and then some viewing …

“Oscar-winner Helen Mirren will lead miniseries Catherine the Great as the tumultuous monarch and politician who ruled the Russian empire and transformed its place in the world in the 18th century. The four-part historical drama will follow the end of Catherine’s reign and her affair with Russian military leader Grigory Potemkin that helped shape the future of Russian politics. Catherine the Great premieres October 21 at 10PM on HBO”

Napoleon’s Retreat from Moscow podcast

BBC Radio 4 have a series of podcasts called In Our Time which seem to have a host of interesting topics … and to be fair a bunch of not so interesting ones! What brings about this notification is a podcast in the podcast entitled Napoleon’s Retreat from Moscow. It could have been improved by the inclusion of someone like Dominic Lieven but still generated some interest if The dear readership has time to kill. FYI – von Peter himself sourced his copy from iTunes for ease of local playback.

As has been mentioned before for some listening on the causes and some history of the 1812 campaign and through to 1813/14 ….

Barons’ War – 28mm Medieval Miniatures kickstarter

It closes soon – Monday 30th September 2019 8:00 AM UTC +13:00 – but if the Barons’ War is of interest to The dear reader then this kickstarter may be of interest.

For many years, Andy Hobday – of Footsore Miniatures & Games – has had a great passion for the often overlooked periods of British history. One of these passions is The Barons’ War – an English civil war in the early 13th-Century between rebellious barons (and their French allies) against King John.

Andy has been chatting with renowned sculptor Paul Hicks about The Barons’ War for some time now, and earlier this year they decided to put together a range that not only represented the arms and armour of the time, but could be used for a number of different rulesets and other locations too.

These miniatures can be used for games set during The Barons’ War, and not only that, they’ll work for both sides of the conflict! Additionally, they’ll work well for games that take you Crusading in the Middle East, particularly the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Crusades (and a few years/decades either side).

Like many of the Footsore ranges, The Barons’ War range will be packed to work well for games like Saga and Lion Rampant. Of course, should the range be very popular, Andy hasn’t ruled out releasing a ruleset of his own.

10mm ancients from Gripping Beast

Gripping Beast are known for their 28mm miniatures. But they have been teasing the occasional picture of 10mm ancients – Parthians and opposing Romans – on their Facebook page.

In a post dated 20th September 2019 …

“We’ll be announcing a release date for the Parthians and Romans soon, so stay tuned!”

von Peter himself has always thought that 10mm would suit himself better if he were to look at smaller scale gaming as there is a bit more figure to be seen than with 6mm Progress shall be observed … form a distance at this stage.

Perry’s soon to reveal a new range/period

See on the Perrys Facebook page in their “Korea 1592” post of 24 September 2019 …

Now this might look like we’re enjoying ourselves playing games all the time………which we are But we are also ‘hard at work’ making quite a lot of figures too. So don’t worry there will be new stuff out, including a new range/period…….”

Hmm. A new range. The mind boggles with the possibilities.

Enough.

Until we meet again …

    • Ah valleyboyo. Well met.

Many years ago our shared acquaintance Garage Gaming Terry asked one of the Perry twins – I can’t remember which one! – if they would do the Seven Years War. The answer was not a “no” but it was commented that the SYW would be like Napoleonics … a bottomless pit!

      Salute

  1. It certainly looks like a great series and great timing since I started reading the Robert Massie book on Catherine the Great last week.
